In 1917, Our Lady appeared on numerous occasions to three shepherd children near the village of Fatima in Portugal. On 13th July, 1917, She showed the three children a vision of Hell (which is considered to be the first part of the Fatima Secret), and then gave them a verbal Message. In this Message (considered to be the second part of the Secret), Our Lady told the children that many souls would be saved from Hell and the annihilation of nations averted if, in time, devotion to Her Immaculate Heart were established principally by these two means:
1. the Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary (this Consecration would result in the conversion of Russia and a period of peace), and
2. the practice or receiving Holy Communion (and other specific devotions of about 1/2 hour in duration) in reparation for the sins committed against the Blessed Virgin Mary, on the first Saturdays of five consecutive months–a practice known to Catholics as “the First Saturday” devotion.
The third part of the Secret was never made known publicly, even though it was supposed to have been revealed by 1960 at the latest. We know that it begins with the words: “In Portugal the Dogma of the Faith will always be preserved etc.” Neither was the Consecration of Russia completed as Our Lady requested. On several occasions, there were consecrations of the world, but not of Russia specifically.
God put His seal of approval on the Apparitions and Message of Fatima by working the extraordinary miracle of the sun on 13th October 1917. More than 70,000 people, including Masons, communists and atheists, saw the sun, contrary to all cosmic laws, twirl in the sky, throw off colours and descend to earth. The event was reported in newspapers around the world, including the New York Times.
What has this got to do with the crisis in the Church?
Although never publicly revealed, several people have seen the third part of the Secret of Fatima. All indicate that it refers to a crisis of Faith in the Church in our time. Cardinal Ratzinger said (in 1984) that it refers to “dangers threatening the Faith”. Bishop Amaral, third bishop of Fatima, said (also in 1984) that “its content concerns only our Faith. The loss of Faith is worse than the annihilation of a nation…”. In 1990, Cardinal Oddi informed us that “the Blessed Virgin was alerting us against apostasy in the Church”, and Cardinal Ciappi (Pope John Paul II’s personal theologian) stated that “in the Third Secret it is foretold, among other things, that the great apostasy in the Church will begin at the top”. While still Cardinal Pacelli, the future Pope Pius XII made the following astonishing prophetic statement in 1937:
“I am worried by the Blessed Virgin’s messages to Lucy of Fatima. This persistence of Mary about the dangers which menace the Church is a divine warning against the suicide of altering the Faith, in her liturgy, her theology and her soul .… I hear all around me innovators who wish to dismantle the Sacred Chapel, destroy the universal flame of the Church, reject her ornaments and make her feel remorse for her historical past.”
What Cardinal Pacelli speaks of is not contained in the first two parts of the Secret. Therefore, he either had direct knowledge of the content of the third part, or else was given a supernatural glimpse of them. Either way, his statement is perfectly consistent with the statements of others who have seen the Secret.
Therefore, the Third Secret clearly refers to the crisis of Faith through which we are living today.
Why was the Secret not revealed and Russia not consecrated?
Sister Lucy said that the Secret was supposed to be revealed by 1960, at the latest. She said that in 1960, its contents would seem clearer.
In 1959, Pope John XXIII called Vatican II. This was the Council which was to be the cause of the current crisis in the Church, the Council at which the “innovators” of which Cardinal Pacelli had spoken tried to “alter the Faith in her Liturgy, her theology and her soul”. In the reign of Pius XI, good Cardinals had warned against the holding of a Council, precisely because the Modernists would hijack it.
The whole world was expecting the Secret to be revealed, when suddenly, in 1960, the Vatican issued a statement through the A.N.I press agency, saying:
“It is probable that the ‘Secret of Fatima’ will never be made public. In Vatican circles highly worthy of belief, they have just disclosed to the representative of United Press International that it is most likely the letter will never be opened…”
It is clear that the Secret was not revealed because it warns about the crisis of Faith and Morals which would flow from the Second Vatican Council. The reason for Russia not having been consecrated is equally clear: such a Consecration would jeopardise the friendly, ecumenical relations which have been in place since 1962 between the Catholic Church on one side and Communism and the schismatic Russian Orthodox communities on the other.
The crisis in the Church today is therefore also a consequence of ignoring the warnings of Our Lady of Fatima and of rejecting Her requests.
